Fear

Secondly, are you old enough to remember going trick-or-treating in your own neighborhood, not at a mall? Do you remember that report about the razor-blade in the apple that caused your parents to freak out. Then your parents made you come home before the sun set on Halloween night.

I don't, regarding the last sentence. My parents weren't that gullible. They knew that that was the one night that kids got to go out and have fun. They also took the report as a possible Halloween hoax, which it turned out to be.

None-the-less, the rumor still lingers as urban legend. Tonight I have had only 2 kids come to my door, and they were dropped off by their parents. The cars waited on the side of the curb to insure that nothing happened to their little monsters.

Thank you Culture of Fear. You're just what we ordered on a night of the walking dead. But, could you let kids be kids and enjoy the wonder I did when I was a young miscreant...

Well, now it's not as "innocent" as razor blades or candy with pcp in it.... now the halloween hoax is about terrorists. A few years ago the rumor was not to go in a mall on halloween because terrorists were going to attack one or many malls.

So yeah, you're not even safe at a mall. But really, are malls safe anyways? Pizza places, cheaply-made but expensive clothing and "deals" on mattresses and TV's? Malls are deadly, even without terrorists!

You're right; we've finally created a society where there is no such thing as a childhood any more. How sad. So, let's rebel and be stupid - have our own (first) second childhood, no matter how old we are! Whataya got to lose? We're all dead from MadCow/W. Nile/terrorist (any race), nuclear, global warming, fast food obesity/cancer - pick one - any way.

Rage against the storm, people!
